“Why is this doctor’s average billing rate so much higher than other clinicians’?”
A general hospital wanted to study the billing rates of two doctors who were the heads of their departments. Both clinicians worked within the Oncology (cancer) Department on similar cases but were administering different treatments.
We found that, on average, Doctor A billed 3x more than Doctor B. After looking at the collected data, we were able to determine that Doctor B’s treatment—which cost 3x less than that of Doctor A’s—achieved the same rate of cancer remission as the more expensive treatment.
We further discovered that Doctor A billed more because he prescribed a far more aggressive chemotherapy regimen. Reducing Doctor A’s treatment to be in line with Doctor B lowered the cost of each patient’s healthcare by 300% while achieving the same level of success and an even better quality of life. By using analytics the hospital saved wasted time and money and provided an overall better level of care.
“How can we save time on repairs?”
A trucking company committed to analytics by installing fuel, wind, load, and GPS sensors in each of their trucks to collect real-time data. On one occasion, central dispatch called one of their drivers and asked her to pull off at the next exit she came to. When the driver questioned the reasoning, the dispatcher explained that, according to the sensors, a certain part on the truck would break within the next 60 miles. If this happened on the highway, the breakdown would delay the trucker by over 6 hours while waiting for the part delivery and the mechanic to come repair it.
By pulling over immediately, the company repaired the worn part, and the trucker merged back onto the highway again with only one hour of delay. In this case, the trucking company saved over 5 hours of transit time. When you multiply those numbers out by hundreds of trucks and routes, you’ll realize just how much more efficient you can be with real-time analytics.
“How can we keep up with the latest fashion trends?”
A large retail company with thousands of stores in malls all over America wanted to stay on top of the latest trends in fashion, so they tied analytics into their Point of Sale devices and built a custom enterprise iPad app to use as a reporting tool.
Each store manager now receives real-time updates on the most popular items in their GEO so that they could reconfigure their store inventory on the fly in order to cater to the current trends – say those new jeans with “tasteful” holes.
